These women, young and old, have looked at her as a role model for inspiration about coping and balancing the demands of family, sports, school, and business enterprises. Her ground-breaking achievements include: being the first woman manager/agent in sports, the developer of the first Junior A hockey team in the U.S., the first indoor rink builder in Michigan, and pioneer of many unique, charitable and humanitarian projects.
Currently, Colleen is founder and president of Power Play International, Inc. and Power Play Publications, Inc. , which are companies that preside over all facets of her and Gordie's unprecedented careers. As well, she is an award winning video producer. Previously, she co-authored the best selling book, "After the Applause" and the popular "My Three Hockey Players". "and… HOWE!", her most recent book project as publisher and co-author, has been an extraordinary success. Now entering its third printing, the hardcover hockey autobiography of all time. Amazingly, the book is not sold in stores and has posted sales of nearly 125,000 copies. Most gratifying to Colleen though is that she and Gordie have been able to share their life story with over 150 non-profit and charitable organizations throughout North America. Utilizing extraordinary effor, that includes travels from Yellow Knife, Canada to Tampa, Florida. The Howes have personally met over 100,000 fans and raised over $700,000 for various charitable endeavors. In addition, the "and… HOWE!" book is the best selling self-published sport's autobiography ever!
As a pioneer, Colleen is remarkably creative. She is founder of the Detroit Junior Red Wings, the first Junior A team in the United States. This organization she helped spearhead served as a catalyst for many fine young hockey players who ultimately realized their dream to play in the National Hockey League. Her legacy as a builder of hockey also includes developing the first indoor ice arena in Michigan aptly named "Gordie Howe® Hockeyland." This ushered in a huge era of youth hockey and earned the rink's home, St. Clair Shores, the distinction of "Hockeyland USA." Hockey enjoys growing popularity in the U.S. today, and the groundwork for this surge was triggered greatly by the various projects that were implemented years ago by Colleen and her family.
In 1973-1975, Colleen was able to change hockey history in another very dramatic way. It was her keen insight and research that led to her sons, Mark and Marty, being drafted by the new professional league's (World Hockey Associations) Houston Aeros. At the time, the National Hockey League had age restrictions which prohibited players under the age of 20 from entering the NHL. Through research and pizzazz, Colleen discovered that the WHA did not have the same ruling. Ultimately, this revolutionary discovery allowed young players like her sons, Mark and Marty, and others, like Wayne Gretzky, to enter professional hockey at an earlier age. This forced the NHL to revise its underage policy, because they were losing great young players to the rival league. Most amazingly, her discovery, besides paving the way for Mark and Marty to be drafted, also allowed their father, Gordie (hockey's greatest superstar) to exit retirement at the age of 45. He was soon able to fulfill a life long dream and join the two sons on the same team. Even now this is considered one of the most amazing sport's achievements in history. Colleen, Gordie, Mark and Marty helped elevate the WHA to greater popularity and propelled hockey to even greater heights. During this time, Colleen was also the first woman to negotiate a multiple player, multiple year contract! Years later, she would negotiate the longest player/personal services contract ever! A varied entrepreneur, Colleen's business endeavors have included such diverse interests as owning pure bred Hereford cattle and llamas, a travel corporation, and a successful Amway multi-level marketing company. She became a life insurance agent. She counseled management and consulting companies, and even took her opponent to a primary when running for U.S. Congress in Connecticut. Over the years, she has served on a variety of boards of directors for hospitals and many organizations and businesses.
In 1993, Colleen created the Howe foundation whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children of all ages. Also, during 1993, Colleen fostered another amazing project. She launched a 65 city fundraising tour in honor of Gordie's 65th birthday to thank the many fans for all the years of support. Unbelievably, the Howes visited 65 cities that year and raised nearly one million dollars – all for charity. As so many can attest, the Howe family is famous for their half-century participation in innumerable charities and fund raisers. The Howe Foundation is still a vibrant cause and its newest focus involves building a Howe Center for Youth Hockey Development that would also house the family's unprecedented memorabilia collection for hockey fans of future generations for their enjoyment and inspiration.
Recently, Colleen was honored by "The March Of Dimes" with their highest national sports honor, "The Lifetime Achievement in Sports Award." In 1996, she and Gordie were inducted into the Michigan Jewish Sport Hall of Fame – Alvin Foon category – making Colleen the first woman to ever win the award. She was Michigan's Sportswoman of the year in 1973. Recently, the Hands of Stone International Museum inducted Colleen into their Celebrity Hall of Fame. She has been lauded by many charitable organizations over their years for her tireless efforts to support special causes. The Detroit newspapers named her Sports Woman of the Year!"
Like many mothers and grandmothers, Colleen is extremely proud of her four children and nine grandchildren, always emphasizing the importance of family. Marty, her oldest son, currently works for Power Play, along with her daughter, Cathy. Mark is employed by the Detroit Red Wings as a scout and their son, Murray, is a respected and successful radiologist in Toledo, Ohio. Their nine grandchildren range in age from 4 years to 21.
As incredible as her husband Gordie was on the ice, Colleen has been as influential off the ice. For nearly 50 years, she has been the fan friendly business end of the family entity. Over the years, thousands of people have thanked Colleen and Gordie for the generosity of their time for autographs, sharing their family with the public, and their amazing down to earth approachability. Although they are a world famous couple, Colleen and Gordie Howe® have never forgotten their depression era roots. In fact, when someone was recently asked to describe hockey's golden team he said, "They are like the nicest grandma and grandpa you could ever meet. They love people." In all of sports, there is no couple quite like "Mr. and Mrs. Hockey®". Universally loved and respected, they represent what is good about sports: family values, sportsmanship, giving back to others, clean living and thankfulness for God's blessings. Today, Colleen and Gordie travel extensively, both statewide and internationally for their company and causes. A few months back, they sojourned to Hong Kong to help promote hockey in Asia.
Colleen serves as a role model for many people. She has always advocated living a healthy lifestyle and maintaining a positive outlook. Truly, she is a can-do person. Incredibly active and dynamic, today she and Gordie are as busy as ever. The have been featured together in TV commercials, as guest speakers at charitable events, and appear at trade shows, private corporate outings and fund raising functions.
